By Dave Green, Contributing Editor & Photographer
The annual "Warbirds in Action" took place 18 April in Shafter, California bringing together about 40 of the most rare warbirds from WWII and a few acrobatic planes as well. There were four P-51 Mustangs, two B-25 Bombers "Executive Sweet" & "Heavenly Body", a Hawker Sea Fury, A Lockheed Model 18 Lodestar, countless BT-13's, a C-53 Sky Trooper, the Zero and Hellcat team and too many others to list off.

The B-25's performed the Doolittle Raid re-enactment to commemorate the 66th year anniversary of the day that sixteen B-25B Bomber left the flight deck of the USS Hornet bound for Tokyo and sought revenge for the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Fitting with this, the Zero and Hellcat performed an air-to-air combat re-enactment to give the crowd an idea of what it was like for these pilots in the Pacific fighting for air superiority. The Hellcat is well known for its roll when introduced in the war August 31, 1943. 4,947 Japanese aircraft were downed in the Pacific by F6F Hellcats, changing the air superiority from the Zeros to the Hellcats!

1944 B-25J “Executive Sweet” performs Doolittle’s Raid on Tokyo re-enactment along with “Heavenly Body” to commemorate the 66th anniversary of the raid on Japan off the deck of the U.S. Aircraft Carrier, USS Hornet. The raid lit a fire under the American people to reinforce the war efforts and stunned the Japanese in believing that their country was within striking reach of the United States Military. From that day forward, the U.S. pushed the Japanese Forces from every island they encountered. These photos are from the Tail Gunner position in the aircraft.
Minter Field's museum is housed in the original fire station, built at Minter Field in 1941. It is the last example of this architecture left on the field. The base was a major training facility where nearly 12,000 pilots received basic training in BT-13s, UC-78's, AT-6s, P-38s, and B-25s.
