The
50th National Waco Club Reunion |
By Andy Heins, Contributing
Editor & Photographer
Mt. Vernon, Ohio |
The 50th National Waco Club Reunion
held the week of June 23 – 28, 2009 was a resounding
success. A total of 52 Waco airplanes were present during
the week, making this the largest gathering of Waco aircraft
since the 1930’s. |

The 50th National Waco Club Reunion |
Beautiful weather was in store for
the entire week, allowing airplanes from around the country
to attend. Farthest distance was Carl Buck in a 1936 Waco
ZKS-6 (affectionately known as “‘Ol BBQ” from
its days as a floatplane in Canada registered as CF-BBQ)
from Longmont, Colorado. Of the 52 aircraft that attended,
there were twenty Cabin models and thirty-two open-cockpit
Wacos. |

The model of Waco best represented
was the UPF-7, with twelve in attendance. Another record
for the show was the attendance of no less then seven 1930
Waco “F” models, featuring the RNF, INF and KNF.
Five Straightwing models were also present, representing
the CRG, ASO, CSO and PSO. |

Several activities took place during
the week-long event, such as a breakfast fly-out to Mt. Victory,
Ohio on Wednesday, June 24 with about eight Wacos participating. |
Wednesday evening was a catered pork
chop dinner on the airport for all Club members and their
guests. |
On Thursday, June 25, eighteen Wacos
flew to Troy, Ohio to visit the Waco Historical Society Air
Museum and have lunch, provided courtesy of the WHS. At least
three additional Wacos joined the group in Troy. |
|
1936 Waco EQC-6 NC16214 the 50th arrival |
Thursday evening was a catered steak
dinner with a 17-piece orchestra playing big-band music for
everyone’s entertainment.
|
Friday, June 26 was left open as a
potential raindate for the Troy fly-out. However, there was
plenty of flying and a great forum by John Eney of research
he and the NWC have been doing at NASM concerning all the
Waco drawings. |
Friday evening was the Club-sponsored
Corn Boil at the airport with nearly 200 people attending. |
Saturday, June 27 saw several additional
forums such as a talk by Steve Curry of Radial Engines Ltd.
on the maintenance and care of Jacobs and Continental engines
and by Roger James of D&D Classics on aircraft sheet metal
work. |
Saturday evening was the banquet with
a wonderful buffet-style dinner followed by an auction to raise
funds to help support the cost of the Reunion. |
All in all there was a great feeling
of camaraderie among all the Waco Pilots, their families, and
all the Club members who attended without aircraft. |
Everyone made it home safely and we are
already making preparations for next year’s event. |
