DEUTSCHES MUSEUM

By Glenn McGowan, Contributing Editor & Photographer

Hall of Early Aviation
The Duetches Museum, in Munich, has been one of the great surprises of the past year. Who would have thought such a beautiful facility existed on an island in the Isar River, which winds through downtown Munich? The museum features aircraft such as an early Bleirot Monoplane to World War II ME-109 to jet fighters such as the F-104 Starfighter. There’s even an original Wright Flyer!

A large number of Junkers aircraft is a highlight of the visit. From the 2 seat A50 to a World War II era airliner/military transport, you get to see a lot of corrugated tin!

The museum also boasts an extensive collection of early aircraft engines.

The museum also includes many artifacts from Germany and other countries. There is also a gallery featuring rocketry and space exploration. As an added bonus, another wing of the Deutches Museum is dedicated to maritime history. It includes several full size sailing ships used on German rivers and the prototype Uboat, the U-1. There is also an extensive collection of maritime artifacts and a large number of the most beautiful and detailed model ships I have ever seen!

Well worth the time if you find yourself in Bavaria! And the Bier Gardens aren’t bad either!
