Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum 40th Anniversary
Hamilton Airshow 2012 - part ii

By Kevin Moore, Contributing Editor & Photographer
Watford, Ontario, Canada

The US Air Force brought two of their A-10 Thunderbolt II for static display,
one of which is shown here turning off the runway to taxi to the CWH ramp.

Last week we had a look at an assortment of resident and visiting warbirds including the B-29, B-17, Lancaster and an assortment of fighters. This week we'll have a look at other participating aircraft, museums and aviation acts that made up the rest of the CWH 40th Anniversary airshow.

The Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association's 3-plane Canadian Harvard Aerobatic
Team perform an outstanding display in their 70+ year old historic Harvard aircraft.

The boys from Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association participated in a large harvard formation and the Canadian Harvard Aerobatic Team flew their aerobatic routine showing off the capabilities of one of the most famous training aircraft ever built, the Harvard (known in the USA as the T-6 Texan). Dave Hewitt, Pete Spence and Kent Beckham always do a impressive job showing airshow audiences what these 70+ year old, vintage radial engine aircraft can do with precision and grace.

The Fokker Triplane tries to get a bead on the Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter, right.

Slowing things down were three replica World War I aircraft from the Great War Flying Museum out of Brampton, Ontario. Flying mock combat were the Fokker Dr.I "Triplane," the Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter and the Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a (80% scale). The "dog-fight" raged for close to 10 minutes resulting with the Fokker Triplane shooting down the S.E.5a and then the 1 1/2 strutter shooting down the "Red Barron."

The Royal Canadian Air Force showed off their spectacular CF-18 2012 Demo Hornet piloted by Captain Patrick "Paco" Gobeil. Afterburners on Paco put the Hornet through a workout that sent a buzz through the crowd. Speed and noise is what the CF-18's performance is all about for the crowd and Gobeil did not disappoint!

Canada's strategic maritime surveillance aircraft, the CP-140 Aurora.

An unusual sight in the skies of Ontario is Canada's only strategic maritime surveillance aircraft, the CP-140 Aurora (the US version is known as the P-3 Orion). The Aurora's flight crew demonstrated why the Aurora is still the aircraft of choice for patrolling Canada's 243,000 kilometers of coastline.

Showing off two US Naval World War II aircraft were the CAF's Curtiss-Wright SB2C Helldiver and the Military Aviation Museum's Grumman TBM-3E Avenger. Not to be outdone, CWH flew a wide variety of their aircraft including the Lysander, DC-3 Dakota, Canso (Catalina), Fairey Firefly, Beech Expeditor (Beech 18), Harvard and their "yellow aircraft" that included the DHC Chipmunk, DHC Tiger Moth, Fleet Finch, Fairchild Cornell, Boeing Stearman and the very rare Fleet Fort.

Always a crowd favourite, the Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds!

Of course, the Royal Canadian Air Force famous and iconic Snowbirds dazzled with their ever-popular display flying the Canadian designed and built Canadair Tutor. From their classic 9-plane formations to their 2-plane solo routines, the Snowbirds are a huge crowd favourite, flying shows throughout Canada and in the United States.

The CWH Avro Lancaster ended the airshow with a series of marvelous passes.

The last act, a spot usually left for the Snowbirds, was the CWH Lancaster. As the airshow was a monument to the history of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, it seems only fitting that the Lancaster close-out the airshow. The graceful lines of this historic airplane, one of only two examples currently flying in the world, were well displayed by the flight crew of the World War II bomber. With her four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines powering the airplane, it was all eyes looking skyward.

CWH members and volunteers work hard to restore aircraft and the two biggest projects currently on the go and nearing completion are the Bolingbroke, left, and the TBM Avenger, right.

Hard work and dedication of CWH members and volunteers helped make this show a great success and bodes well for future CWH Hamilton Airshows. Whether we'll see 3 four-engine bombers in the sky together again remains to be seen but, if there's a group that can do it again, you know Canadian Warplane Heritage will be the ones to do it!

Probably the most recognizable and loved airplane in the CWH fleet, the Avro Lancaster.
