Looking up from the grass

By Kevin Moore, Contributing Editor & Photographer
Watford, Ontario, Canada

There's nothing like watching warbirds fly from a grass airfield and Geneseo, NY and the National Warplane Museum is a great place to do just that as is apparent when you see aircraft like the magnificent P-51D Mustang "Quick Silver" sitting on the grass along the flightline.

There are few places in North America where you can sit and enjoy an airshow from the grass, the same grass that the vintage aircraft you're enjoying are using to taxi and take off from.  The National Warplane Museum in Geneseo, New York is such a place with their airshow known as "The Greatest Show on Turf."

The weekend of July 11, 12 & 13 the grass at Geneseo will be covered with a wide variety of vintage aircraft from the de Havilland Chipmunk, to the National Warplane Museum's iconic C-47 "W7" to the famous de Havilland Mosquito, an airplane that so many looked forward to during the 2013 airshow but wasn't able to make the trip.

Geneseo is a great place to spend the weekend with RV camping available on site, and places like Henrietta/Rochester and Batavia within a 30 minute drive. From the volunteers that help prepare and put on the show, to the pilots that fly during the event, the crews that keep the aircraft ready to fly and those who come to see the show, it is also one of the friendliest places to watch airplanes take to the skies.

The historic C-47 "Whiskey 7" with a VIP car parked in front of it from the same era, left, and the C-47 taxiing out before take-off, right.

Aircraft the airshow expect to have at the show are similar to some aircraft that have been at the show in previous years along with some new additions. Of course the National Warplane Museum will have their historic C-47 "Whiskey 7," after having returned from the 70th anniversary of D-Day landings in Normandy. This stunning C-47 is always popular with the crowd and with the latest bit of history added to her already impressive pedigree, she's sure to be as or more popular than ever.

The Beech C-45 on take-off, left, and in a nice pass, right.

The Beech C-45, as always, will grace the skies as well. This aircraft is privately owned by 2 members of the 1941 HAG/National Warplane Museum who fly it as part of the museum's collection. Built in 1954, the airplane is now 60 years old but is in marvelous condition and is obviously well taken care of by her owners and the museum.

One of the most beautiful P-51 Mustangs on the airshow circuit
is the P-51D "Quick Silver."

Also returning to the show will be Scott Yoak and his stunning P-51D Mustang "Quick Silver." This fabulous example of a P-51D was lovingly restored with the polished metal work of the aircraft done by Bill Yoak and are handmade by the 'master craftsman.' The livery the Mustang is painted in represents those who served, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice, for the love or their country and the freedom that American's have today.

Charlie Lynch and his TBM Avenger landing at Geneseo, left,
and in a nice level pass, right.

Charlie Lynch will return with his magnificent TBM -3U Avenger.  The aircraft is operated as part of the "Yak Attack" team but flies on her own for airshows.  The Avenger is one of the largest single engine radial aircraft built and carried a crew of 3.  The aircraft could carry an assortment of bombs or torpedo and was used by many different countries and included dozens of variants through it's lifetime.

John "Skipper" Hyle in his lovely Canadian built Havard Mk 4.

John "Skipper" Hyle will return to the line up, performing a series of graceful, if not gut-wrenching, aerobatics in his Canadian built, Canada Car & Foundry, Harvard Mk 4. This particular aircraft served with the Royal Canadian Air Force, beginning its service in 1952 at #1 Flying Training School at RCAF Trenton and was struck-off-strength in 1966. She also flew with the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, Ontario, and ended up in British Columbia flying with an aerial combat operation for a period of time. She is now flown by "Skipper" who has experience in many different aircraft including the National Warplane Museum's C-47 "W7."

Warrior Aviation's L-39 showing off her top-side during a roll, left,
and in formation with P-51D Mustang, "Glamorous Gal," right.

Warrior Aviation also returns with their fast and loud L-39 Albatross. In past years a Warrior L-39 has not only flown as part of a solo act at Geneseo, but also done some fabulous formation passes with a P-51D and, in 2013, a T-6 Texan. We'll have to wait and see what fabulous fighter the L-39 forms up with this summer!

If you enjoy watching high performance aerobatics
you'll enjoy watching Rob Holland in his very agile MX2.

Rob Holland also returns to Geneseo to perform his heart-stopping, stomach turning aerobatics in the MX2. Rob performs at airshows across the US and in Canada and never fails to impress, not just airshow spectators, but other airshow pilots and crews alike. He is one of the top 10 aerobatic pilots in the world and it shows in his ability to make the MX2 dance like few other aircraft can!

From Canada comes The Great War Flying Museum from Brampton, Ontario, near Toronto, flying their replica World War I aircraft around Lake Ontario to the grass strip at Geneseo. These historic aircraft will perform mock dogfights in the skies above Geneseo with the eventual shooting down of the "Red Baron." Though they are not the fastest aircraft, for their day some of these aircraft were relatively high performance.

The Liberty Jump Team descending to earth after jumping
from the National Warplane Museum's C-47.

Rounding out the current list of acts is the Liberty Jump Team, who joined "Whiskey 7" in Europe for the "Return to Normandy" event in early June this year. The team jumps using static line system from C-47's in the United States as well as in Europe. The team consists of an assortment of very experienced parachutists from countries such as the United States, Canada, France, England, Ireland, Holland, Germany, Belgium and South Africa.
